An online business can make money in a variety of ways depending on what type of business model you choose to run. As an individual I like marketing information products to small untapped niches and it has proved to be very profitable for many who are doing it correctly. Here are the four essential steps to starting a small business online using this type of business model.

Step #1) Research Before you Start

What you need to do first is locate a niche that is going to make you some money. This is a fairly easy process because most of the work is already done for you. What you are going to have to do is search around to see what kind of topics are “hot” so to speak. Since you are going to be selling digital information in the form of a down loadable Ebook, look through Amazon.com to see which books are selling and in what niche.

Amazon ranks all of their products and gives information as to how good or how bad a book may or may not be. They include customer reviews and categorize each book in several categories. Find a few books in niches that you may know a bit about and then use a keyword tool to see how popular the keywords are online for that niche.

Once you have found a few books that are selling good, you are somewhat knowledgeable in, and that are getting searched on quite a bit, your next move is to check the competition. To do this, you just need to simply take those same keywords and plug them into Google using quotations. Google will then give you a number of search results for your query. You need to find a niche that has a whole lot of keywords that receive at least 1,000 searches per month yet have under 10,000 search results. Once you found a niche that satisfies these conditions, then you have found potentially a profitable niche and can move on to the next step to starting a small business online.

Step #2) Product Creation

Now you know what niche you are going to go into, your next step is to get your product created. If you think you are knowledgeable enough to write an E book in the niche you choose then by all means go for it. I realize though that not everyone has the time or patience to be able to write an entire book. Not only that but you want to ensure that the book is well written and will legitimately help your customers as well.

It is best to outsource this work. Let me repeat that again…It is best to outsource this work. Unless you are so confident that you will have the time and skill to do it, you need to outsource it. It works best by first hiring a researcher and then hiring a writer to put the research into book form.

There are many sites where you can find workers but I would suggest posting an add on CraigsList and going that route. It will end up costing much less than finding someone on Elance or anywhere else.

Step #3) Set Up Your Website and Affiliate Program

Again here on step 3, it’s also wise to put this into the hands of someone who is technically sound and skilled at creating and uploading websites. I’m not saying you can’t do it but it will take time to learn where to find some templates and you will also need to learn html. Take my advice again and have someone do it for you.

Also, you need to go into ClickBank.com and sign up for an account so you can have others promote and sell your product. Offer a commission somewhere upwards of 50% and post it on the marketplace. As you start to sell your product it will move up the rankings in the marketplace and then you’ll see even more money coming in from the affiliates who sell your book.

Step #4) Market and Promote Your Product

You can either spend money to advertise your website and product or go about doing it the free way. The latter in my opinion is by far the best. You should learn about SEO a.k.a. search engine optimization and use keywords and the search engine to drive your traffic.

Other free ways to promote and drive traffic to your website are by joint venture projects, participating in forums, blogging, article marketing, and releasing press releases. It’s best to find a form of promotion that works best for you and just rinse and repeat it early and often.

What I did not mention is how to monetize your website so you can earn money on autodrive without having to do more than your normal site upkeep. Step 3) The very last step of the process to start a web business is promoting your website. Now, if you do this right, realistically you could have it set up where your web business is running itself automatically and creating sales without you having to do anything.

By a process called Search Engine Optimization. Take some time now and do a quick Google search to see exactly what I am talking about here.

As you’ll see, it is quite possible to get your website ranked on the top of the search engines for chosen keywords. The process to get to that point will take some time, but your efforts will be well paid off.

The basics of promoting your website and moving your website up the search charts has to do with picking up back links. Generally speaking again, the more back links you have pointing to your site, the higher you will rank for your keywords, the more traffic you will get, and the more sales and money you will make.

You can get back links by writing articles, posting in forums, submitting your website to directories, using social bookmarks, press releases, and commenting on other blogs just to name a few.

The first thing you have to do to ensure success is to make sure you choose a niche that is going to make you some money. There are a couple of things you have to research on to know if it is going to be profitable or not; demand and competition.

Knowing whether or not there is going to be demand for a certain product or service online is easy to figure out. Simply use the information that is already available. Magazines, television, and billboard advertisements are a good way to measure demand. If you see certain ads poping up in all different kind of magazines, tv, or on billboards that product is more than likely selling and may sell online as well.

Before I have my online business set up, I first go to Amazon.com to research the niche and see what types of books are selling offline. If I see many books in the niche I was thinking about starting up I will take that as a good sign and then look into search queries to see how many people are searching for this niche online. If I see that there are plenty of people searching for information in this niche, that’s also a good sign and may be worth setting up a website.

Once I determine that there is plenty of demand for a certain product or service I don’t quite jump straight into the online business set up, the next step is to check into competition. To do this, all you have to do is enter some of those keyword phrases or words that you searched on earlier when checking the search query results. Those numbers showed us how many people are searching for those terms, now we have to enter them into Google using quotes to show us how many competitors there are.

Just to give you a general idea, I look for search terms that get over 1,000 monthly searches and under 10,000 competing sites. These will be the easiest terms to get you free traffic with. But in order to really check your competition you should look for websites using the most searched upon terms in your niche and usually you will find the best competition sitting in the top 1 or 2 search results.

To make sure you get most of the markets share of traffic, it would be wise to only enter a niche or set up an online business if there are 2 or 3 main competitors tops. It is possible to make money in a niche with thousands of competitors but the search terms and words you will have to use will require more effort to find and will be harder to implement in your content.

Last but not least, when you do find an online business worth setting up, make sure all aspects of your site are covered before you go live with it. Check to make sure all your links are working properly, your pages are displaying correctly, and that you have all your tracking set up properly as well. It will be hard to make sales if your visitors have problems finding your product or if they re not even sure what it is you are selling.

ClickBank sells digital information online and you can search through their marketplace to find some hot selling products. The nice thing about ClickBank is that the products that they sell through their website is that they include affiliate programs. This means you don’t even have to own your own product to sell and you can make as much as 70% commissions on the products you do sell.

Test the Numbers

Not only does the internet give us an idea of what products are going to sell and what markets to sell to, but you can also check to see exactly how many people are searching for specific terms online.

Using Google Adwords Free Keyword Tool you can find the total number of searches per month for each keyword or keyword phrase you use. All you have to do is identify some keywords that your target customer will type in to find your website or product.

What I try to do with my own target marketing strategy is find a bunch of keywords that are getting at least 1,000 searches per month but less than 10,000 competitors. You can check to see how many websites you are competing against by using the keywords as a search with quotes in Google.
